Rafaela's paintings and ceramic sculptures often begin with fragmented impressions—memories, archival images, subconscious sketches—slowly building into compositions where mysticism and womanhood intertwine. The figures she creates are neither wholly real nor entirely imagined; they exist somewhere between history and fantasy, formed as much by instinct as by research.

“My work grows out of process,” de Ascanio explains. “It is not about telling a story, at least not at first. I begin with a form, a texture, a feeling, and gradually something takes shape. The act of making brings the figures to life—sometimes idols, sometimes relics—caught in a space between reverence and resistance.”

This ongoing dialogue between materials and themes allows de Ascanio’s work to question the constraints placed on female identity—both in history and in the present. Through ceramics, oil painting, and immersive installation, she constructs a world where symbols shift, where myth becomes malleable, and where the weight of the past lingers in contemporary bodies.
