Sophie Glover (b.1992) lives and works in South-East London making paintings, drawings & jewellery. She paints still lives & portraits using symbolic objects, resting in domestic settings, to explore themes of rest, personal ritual and the occult. Her still lives are little tableaus of her thoughts; a way to formalise memory and solidify nostalgia. Each one is made from the last and repeating icons constantly reappear; women sleeping heavy as rocks, anaemic fruit and flowers, insects, phones glowing ominously, a self-portrait by her Grandmother. Inspired by the domestic paintings of female artists such as Jean Cooke and Celia Paul, she uses still life as a way of describing the rise and fall of her world. Her paintings have been sold into various private collections as well as being frequently commissioned. Sophie was awarded Arts Council England's Grants for the Arts and has been long-listed for the BP Portrait Award & Jackson’s Art Prize. She has undertaken several residencies as well as participating in multiple solo and group exhibitions including Chiaroscuro, Milieu Studios, St Ives 2024, Emblems, Partnership Editions, London 2024, Inside/Outside, Soho Revue, London 2024, Baggage Claim, Staffordshire Street, London 2023, DOA Show, London 2021, LSI WIP Show, Camden Arts Centre, London 2019, Jardin d’Hiver, Regionmuseet Kristianstad, Sweden 2016, Drawing Biennial, Drawing Room, Bermondsey 2015.
